The impact of global forest fires on climate can be seen from various aspects that affect environmental balance. Forest fires, which are often caused by human activities as well as natural conditions, make a significant contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The process of burning trees and vegetation releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) into the atmosphere, which directly contributes to global warming. One of the most striking impacts of forest fires is an increase in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. A study shows that forest fires contribute up to 20% of total global GHG emissions. These emissions exacerbate climate change, disrupting weather patterns and increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as floods and storms. The impact is not just limited to emissions. Forest fires also result in loss of biodiversity. Many species of flora and fauna that depend on forest habitats are experiencing population decline or even extinction. This biodiversity loss disrupts the ecosystem that functions as a climate buffer. For example, forests serve as effective carbon stores; when forests are burned, this carbon storage capacity is permanently lost. Additionally, forest fires worsen air quality. Smoke produced from fires contains dangerous particles, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Long-term exposure to poor air quality can cause health problems, such as respiratory problems and heart disease, which impact human productivity and increase the burden of health costs. Wetland ecosystems are also affected by forest fires. When forests burn, wetlands that function as water stores and climate regulators can lose their function. This results in salinity dilution and habitat damage which can disrupt aquatic life, affecting the availability of clean water for humans and other living creatures. Furthermore, forest fires create a negative feedback cycle for the climate. As global temperatures increase due to emissions, the likelihood of further fires increases. Climate change is causing lower humidity and hotter conditions that create ideal situations for fires. Thus, we enter a cycle that is difficult to break, where increasingly frequent and intense fires cause more emissions, which in turn accelerates climate change. A series of sustainable policies and practices are needed to address this problem. Forest restoration efforts, reducing fires through better land management, and increasing public awareness about the impacts of forest fires are key in facing this challenge. More in-depth research into the long-term impacts of forest fires on the climate should also be prioritized to formulate effective, data-based mitigation strategies. Implementing monitoring technology and using an early fire detection system can also reduce the risks and impacts caused. In facing the threat of forest fires, global collaboration among countries, non-governmental organizations and civil society is also an important step. Only by collaborating across sectors can we reduce the impact of forest fires on the climate and create a more sustainable future.
